The word Abárzuza, comes from Basque and it means a place abundant in wood; de abar (branch in Basque), zur (wood) or tzu (abundant) and -tza (relating to abundance). In Basque, the name of the village is written Abartzuza. According to the INE (Instituo Nacional de Estadistica - the Spanish Statistical Office), in the 1842 census, the municipality called Abárzuza and Anderaz, Anderaz is the name of a district of Abárzuza. The inhabitants of Abárzuza received the name of “dobleros” (a small loaf of bread).
