The surrounding area

Abárzuza (Abartzuza in Basque) is a municipality of the autonomous community of Navarre, situated in the Merindad of the Estella region, 42 kilometres from Pamplona-Iruña, the capital of Navarre. It is located on the mid-western side of Navarre, and geographically belongs with the Deierri-Yerri Valley. The altitude is 567 metres above sea level and has a population of approximately 548 inhabitants.

Bound to the North with the Urbasa-Andía and Zunbeltz, to the West Lezáun and the Deierri-Yerri Valley, to the South Deierri-Yerri and to the West the Allín Valley, Ameskoa Baja and Urbasa. It’s neighbouring municipality, 3.5 km, you can find the Irantzu Monastery, is a must see tourist attraction. It is a Cistercian style building built in the XII Century, highly recommended because of its beautiful architecture and the natural surroundings.

The people and etymology

The word Abárzuza, comes from Basque and it means a place abundant in wood; de abar (branch in Basque), zur (wood) or tzu (abundant) and -tza (relating to abundance). In Basque, the name of the village is written Abartzuza. According to the INE (Instituo Nacional de Estadistica - the Spanish Statistical Office), in the 1842 census, the municipality called Abárzuza and Anderaz, Anderaz is the name of a district of Abárzuza. The inhabitants of Abárzuza received the name of “dobleros” (a small loaf of bread).

Festivals and customs

The patron saint’s festivals of Abárzuza are celebrated between the 13th and 19th of August, and always coincide with the date of the patron saint, The Virgin of the Assumption, on the 15th of August and the patron saint, Saint Roque on the 16th of August. Curiously, on the last day of the festivals they celebrate a lunch on the outskirts of the Irantzu Monastery; it is known as the “Abadejada”.
Other dates that are worth visiting are at Easter, in Holy Week.
